Pioneer AVIC-Z1 DVD Receiver
The AVIC-Z1 also gives you touchscreen control over the entire system, voice control over several navigation functions, and playback of your DVDs and CDs. The strong internal amplifier puts out plenty of power for a full, rich sound. And you can use the interactive touchscreen menus to adjust the extensive tone controls, so the sound is just right for your vehicle.
Like any navigation system, the AVIC-Z1 uses a combination of maps displayed on the screen and voice prompts that tell you when to turn. So what makes this system stand out from the rest? It stores its huge TeleAtlas map database on its 30-gigabyte hard drive. Just use the touchscreen to punch in your destination, whether it’s a street address or one of the nearly 11 million points of interest — wherever you go, you’ll be able to find hotels, restaurants, banks, gas stations, and much more.
The AVIC-Z1 remembers the roads you travel frequently, and over time suggests roads with which you’ll be familiar and comfortable. When calculating your route, the “smart routing algorithm” takes into account data like posted speed limits and number of turns required to reach your destination. You’ll be sure to get the most efficient route the system can find to get where you’re going as quickly as possible — unless you’d like to take the scenic route, of course.
You and the AVIC-Z1 can carry on a dialogue, too. The included microphone lets you control many aspects of the navigation system using voice commands. And it’s programmed with a large vocabulary, which makes giving commands easier than ever. For example, all you have to say is “L-A-X” without specifying the category “airport”.
Text-to-speech technology allows the AVIC-Z1 to announce most street names as you’re approaching your turn, so you’ll know where to turn without having to take your eyes off the road. The advanced system helps the system pronounce many tricky names correctly, instead of phonetically as some systems do.
All that, and music, too
This versatile DVD player reserves up to 10 gigabytes of the hard drive’s memory to store music it rips from your standard CDs, plus the MP3 files you’ve burned on disc. The preloaded Gracenotes® software will even pull up and display the disc, artist, and track names for most CDs. You’ll have a virtual jukebox in your dash, loaded with your favorite tunes.
You can also use the 7″ screen to watch your favorite DVD videos while you’re parked. Connect a rear-seat video screen and wireless headphones, and the folks in back can keep watching while you’re on the road. “Tri-Zone” capability means you can listen to one source, like the radio, up front while a movie plays in back and the AVIC-Z1 continues navigating.
XM NavTraffic
Add a compatible XM NavTraffic radio (see “Accessories”) and subscribe to XM’s innovative NavTraffic™ service. You’ll receive continuously updated traffic information in many major metropolitan areas, including traffic accident alerts, road closure info, plus the average speed of traffic on the roads along the route you’re navigating. You can prepare for traffic snags well in advance, and adjust your route accordingly.
Roadside Assistance
Pioneer also offers you a Roadside Assistance package that lets you access emergency contact information by pressing a button. The screen shows your exact location, including latitude and longitude readings, so you’ll be able to direct emergency personnel. You also get an offer for a year’s worth of free roadside assistance service from a national auto club.
System expansion
Use Pioneer’s iPod® interface adapter to play your iPod through the AVIC-Z1, and control it using the touchscreen. You can also add a CD changer or an XM or SIRIUS satellite radio to extend your entertainment options. If you have a cell phone that’s compatible with Bluetooth®, the optional Bluetooth cell phone adapter lets you make and receive phone calls without touching your phone or taking your eyes off the road to dial.
